More Peonies

I have been happily been enjoying many fresh cut peonies in the house.  Unfortunately the peony season is short and sweet.

Last year I tried saving some using a technique I saw on Martha Stewart which failed miserably.  This year I am trying to save a few for the future by cutting the blooms while still closed and storing them in water in the fridge.  We will see how well it works this year.

They Are Coming!

I have been keeping an eye out, checking every couple of days to see if the peonies were starting to emerge.  And this weekend they finally popped out!  We will have peonies very soon.

Martha Stewart Was Wrong

Over a month ago I wrapped up my peony buds via the method I watched Martha Stewart do on her show so that I could take them out at a later date to enjoy them.  I thought it was odd that they were packed dry but I figured Martha knew best.  I even shared this tip with all of you.  I decided to take out some of the flowers to put in a vase and when I opened up the package they had all dried out.  So even the almighty Martha sometimes gets it wrong.  Lesson learned always store unopened flower buds in the fridge with water.

Peonies

Peonies in our area are in full bloom!  They are my favorite and I can never get enough.  Our peonies this year are doing well.  An older peony plant that we transplanted last year bloomed this year, which was exciting.  The new roots I planted a year ago are growing well but will take a couple more years before they bloom.

We have a house that has been vacant on our street for over a year.  They have beautiful peonies and since no one is living there I figured no one would mind if I cut a few for myself.  The magenta color is gorgeous!

Last year I saw a method on how to keep peonies buds fresh so that you can have peonies later in the year.  I am wrapping the buds in a newspaper and securing them with a rubber band.  They will be stored on their side in the fridge and I plan on taking them out 1 or 2 at a time to enjoy peonies over the Summer.

Peonies

Our peonies are coming in which excited me since they are my all time absolute favorite flower.  Their delicate layers and frilly petals are just absolutely gorgeous.  I am delighted at their arrival.  Unfortunately I have no clue if we will have blooms this year.  The largest of the three was an established plant from my Mother-In-Law.  She gifted me the plant because she knew how much I loved them and it needed a newer sunny spot since the surrounding plants had matured and shadowed it at her house.  Last year as expected there were no blooms due to the transplant.  This year will be a guessing game as to if it will bloom or need another year.  The two smaller plants were new rootstock I planted last year and I don't expect blooms from them for at least another year.
