Straw

All the leaves that I had piled on top of the parsnips and garlic to insulate them from freezing has blown away.  I try to not spend unnecessary dollars in the garden but I finally had to break down and buy some straw so that I could protect them from the freezing temps we have been having.

  1. I planted garlic for the first time this month in Virginia. Do you think I should add some pine straw for insulation?

  2. This is my first year trying fall planted garlic in the past I have always use spring planted varieties. I have no idea how it affects the garlic if they freeze. What I read is that you are supposed to protect them from the ground freezing. So if your winters are cold enough to freeze the ground then I would suggest protecting the garlic just to be on the safe side.
