I thought after the potatoes hadn't come in for over 2 weeks that my first year trying potatoes was a bust. In fact I bought another tomato plant to go in their place. That was until I noticed these tiny green sprouts coming up. It seems that I might get spuds this year.
Good! It always takes my potatoes about 30 days to show some green leaves popping from the soil. Some seed potato chunks, from the very same seed potato, take even longer. I have beds with 12" high plants right next to 3" high plants. Out of (I think) 55 seed pieces I planted, 54 finally grew.
ReplyDeleteThat is an excellent germination rate! Good to know this is typical.
DeleteI planted red, white and yukon gold at the same time. White showed up first a week after planting; red took about two weeks and yukon almost a full month. Never know with them!
ReplyDeleteI planted red first, white and Yukon gold a week later. My reds are over a foot high, the whites right behind them and the YG the shortest and last to come up. The last time I grew YG, they were much slower than the others, but they soon caught up and ended up being my tallest potato plants.
DeleteMine are yukon gold which would explain why they took so long to come in.
