Onions and Leeks

I didn't plan on planting onions this year but as I was picking up my started leeks there were some "Candy" onions and I thought I would give them a try.  I normally start onions from sets but this time I am trying them from started plants.

I know how to prep the leeks for planting so I did the same for the onions.  After teasing the roots apart I trimmed them to about two inches in length.

I couldn't find any specific depth to plant them at on the tag or in any of my books so I planted them 6 inches apart about four to six inches deep.  We will see what happens.  The leeks I planted eight inches deep.

  1. My onions for the first time EVER seem to be doing well this year! *Fingers Crossed*

I need to do leeks, we use them a lot but I always feel like I am behind the game on getting them in?

    1. I never have luck with onions, they always have great leaves and puny bulbs. I have had good success with leeks which is why I made sure to include them. I thought maybe using starts instead of sets might give me some onion success, we will see

  2. Belle and I were just talking about leeks and onions tonight. I bet you'll have great success. In our very, very limited experience... waiting the extra couple of weeks to harvest onions seems to help. It sounds like leeks do very well for you. Any secrets?
